The COVID-19. Coming to a city near you.

I’m at home today. The corona virus (COVID-19) is descending into the South Jersey/Philadelphia area. Schools are closing. Social events are being cancelled. Breaking News reports pop up on my phone all day long. Too much news can scare the hell out of you. This morning I decided to start a new topic on my blog. The Corona Virus from here.

A little about me: I worked 35 years as a pharmacist in an city teaching hospital. I’ve had a string of health issues and am now on disability or as I like to say..I had a surprise retirement. I’ve fought my way through bypass surgery, a stroke and a couple episodes of anaphylaxis. I’ve gone through every type of physical/cognitive therapy and Cardia Rehab twice. I’ve been left with two 98% blocked cardiac arteries. I take lots of meds. I have been trying to eat more plant based meals. My doctors have encouraged me to get to the gym 5 times a week. I see so many medical people, going to appointments feels like a full time job. I’ve had a difficult couple of years.

Now we have Corona.

I’m trying to be smart and safe but I don’t want to get carried away or panic. In anticipation of COVID-19, I hit Costco, ShopRite and the liquor store. I refilled my prescriptions and I did what I could for my 80 year old mother who lives 10 minutes away. Then I waited.

The news is confusing at best.

Right now CNN is reporting about the conditions in New York. The National Guard has been called out to quarantine an entire town. More schools and colleges are staying closed after spring break. And for some strange reason, everyone is hoarding toilet paper. We are getting mixed messages from the government. In my mind, Dr Fauci from the CDC is the voice of reason and the one I trust the most. Dr Fauci led us through the HIV crisis. He is our best of the best. When he talks, I listen.

The Corona Crisis is unfolding in such strange ways. Life feels surreal. I can’t help but wish things were more black and white. So much information and I still am not sure what to do and not do. I meet every risk criteria. Should I self isolate? Most of my friends and family are just going about their normal lives and using gallons of hand sanitizer. I don’t want to be the “Panic Lady”, but it’s hard to know what to do and when.

I’m going to use this blog to share my thoughts and experiences as we all go through this crisis. I will only report information from respected reliable sources. I will do my best to keep politics out of this blog but it is such an integral part of this situation, I have to consider it’s impact on our situation.

I would love to hear what you all are thinking and doing. All opinions are welcome. Just keep it polite and respectful. I’ve been thinking of how our country pulled together during WWII. We need to care for each other and our entire country. We are ALL Americans. We are ALL at risk.

Let’s share info, ideas and thoughts.

FYI.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has just declared the Corona Virus a pandemic.
